Pursuit of Acceptance

Ohio Department of Mental Health Video in honor of National Mental Health Awareness Month:

The link below is to an amateur video project that was started more than a year ago with the help of interns from Kent State University. The goal was to make a video about mental illness that was positive and upbeat – kind of a “road” picture that would discuss the journey to wellness. Various advocacy groups, and staff at hospitals and central office, helped to connect to consumers who agreed to be interviewed.

During the days of taping with different people in different cities, one theme emerged repeatedly — the importance of peer support. So, that became the focus in editing the project down to what is still a bit long at 11 minutes. View at your convenience and share in any way that you think it would be helpful.  Happy National Mental Health Awareness Month 2013!

This is an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation noting the observance:

“For many, getting help starts with a conversation. People who believe they may be suffering from a mental health condition should talk about it with someone they trust and consult a health care provider. As a Nation, it is up to all of us to know the signs of mental health issues and lend a hand to those who are struggling. Shame and stigma too often leave people feeling like there is no place to turn. We need to make sure they know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness — it is a sign of strength.”
